Commentary

Employers are increasingly gathering data on employees – from workplace behavior to social media use and other personal information — to produce insights that benefit the business. This raises a significant question. Is your employer watching your every move? A new HR Metrics & Analytics Summit survey found that 80% of organizations are using employee records and data to measure performance. A fair number of organizations are also using employee records and data to measure retention, reduce turnover, enhance engagement and recruitment. Interestingly, less than 40% of organizations are making use of employee data to enhance company culture.

The data shows that employees find it the most acceptable to be monitored through workplace-related tasks, work email, and work phones. The most unacceptable monitoring platforms are private social media accounts, physical movements within the workplace, and personal interactions. Overall, employees do not mind data collection related to concrete business goals but are generally opposed to being monitored through personal sources. Seventy-two percent of respondents find it unacceptable for employers to monitor private social media accounts. More than half additionally indicated that tracking physical movements and personal interactions in the workplace is objectionable.

Caroline Goulding has been named Data Protection Officer Under GDPR for LinkedIn. Goulding will return to her home country of Ireland, where she will help ensure that LinkedIn stays compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation.

Newly published public documents indicate that Eric Ly – LinkedIn’s first chief technology officer and one of its founders – is raising funds for the Hub Token, which is tied to a forthcoming platform called ICOHub. ICOHub was launched in April, as reported at the time by VentureBeat, with the goal of creating a platform for more reputable token sales.

Job Boards, Social Media Sites & Recruitment Advertising

There isn’t any specific mention of job postings, but Facebook announced that it’s testing the ability for Marketplace users to promote their listings to their neighbors. Anyone who isn’t directly in Marketplace will see these ads as “sponsored” posts in their News Feed. Facebook says it’s monitoring the small, US-based test for now and doesn’t immediately have plans for a wide rollout. Users will be able to set their budget and determine how long they want their campaign to last. The ads will be pulled immediately once an item is sold. There isn’t a set price for an ad. Instead, all submitted ads are entered into Facebook’s ad auction where they will be considered alongside other ads trying to target the same people in the same area. The auction doesn’t reward the highest bidder with an ad but attempts to instead figure out what ad delivers the highest value to both the user trying to advertise and the ad viewer. .Jobs launched their new job seeker audience targeting platform. The organization, best known for their career-focused domains and websites, created the platform to meet the needs of “companies frustrated with current job board services.” The service consumes the open positions of client organizations, categorizes each position, and matches open positions to 500+ unique job seeker audiences. The newly mapped positions are then distributed to the career websites whose visitors are most correlated to the position. Source: Media Release

Microsoft announced that LinkedIn job postings now include commute times via Bing Maps. Job postings will now show how long it will take to commute to the job, by making use of Bing Maps’ data. Source: Media Release

Astreya, an IT solutions provider, announced the acquisition of HireMore, a connected global candidate sourcing and talent engagement platform. The acquisition of HireMore reinforces Astreya’s commitment to talent acquisition and enhances its ability to deliver innovative technology enabled solutions over the coming years. HireMore will be merged into Astreya R&D. By combining HireMore’s technology and resources, with Astreya’s service portfolio, the combined company will offer best-of-breed solutions for businesses to achieve operational efficiency and gain a competitive edge. Cornerstone OnDemand (NASDAQ:CSOD), a global leader in cloud-based learning and human capital management software, today announced several enhancements to the Cornerstone Recruiting Suite to help organizations create a more positive candidate experience, as well as attract the right talent to successfully fill positions. Enhancements include new “one-minute” mobile application capabilities for job candidates, as well as an efficient, streamlined candidate management experience for talent acquisition professionals. eQuest announced it has successfully passed its GDPR audit and assessment as it pertains to all GDPR requirements as a data processor. The GDPR analysis confirmed that the personal identifiable information (or PII) eQuest collects is satisfactorily protected and securitized according to GDPR specifications. This independent analysis was performed by the highly reputable UK firm of IT Governance based in London. eQuest’s solutions encrypt data with 256-bit AES data encryption in transit and at-rest. eQuest regularly validates recovery time objectives (RTOs), recovery point objectives (RPOs) and service level agreements (SLAs) with automated disaster recovery testing and application-level recovery annually. Udacity and Google have teamed up again to prepare a list of professional online courses available for free to recent graduates and mid-career professionals. The courses are designed to help employees improve their chances of getting a job, regardless of whether it is a first job or a mid-career course change, similar to the course “Networking for Career Success” that they launched in March and that had 60,000 students around the world. On this occasion there are 12 courses on various topics, ideal for expanding CVs, learning how to write a cover letter, knowing how to use GitHub or improving contacts in professional social networks. Among the most technical courses is the one for “data structures and algorithms in Python”, but it is not the only one. ENGAGE Talent, an artificial intelligence software company that provides predictive insights that enable employers to strategically source, target and engage with candidates, announced a partnership with HonorVet Technologies, a technology-driven talent search staffing firm driven to eradicate the alarming underemployment rate affecting military veterans. According to a Syracuse University survey, 43% of veterans leave their first civilian job within their first year, and 80% leave before the end of their second year, citing a lack of opportunity for career advancement and personal development. “Our science identifies misalignment between people, roles, and companies in dynamic markets. This misalignment is especially common in veterans returning to the workforce,” ENGAGE Talent CEO Joseph Hanna said. “We are excited to work with HonorVet to help fix this problem, and to help returning veterans increase their job satisfaction and productivity.” Source: Media Release

World Careers Network (WCN) has recently rebranded as Oleeo alongside a shift to new offers that will allow recruiters to maximize their time for talent engagement. Oleeo’s global officers will now present machine learning and big data-based capabilities amongst their talent acquisition tools to their users, which include a multiple award-winning Applicant Tracking System and revamped Candidate Relationship Management platform. “The world of work has transformed significantly since we first launched more than two decades ago.
