“AI has huge potential to transform our lives, but the term itself is being abused in very worrying ways, says Zachary Lipton, an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University.
Billions of dollars are being invested into AI startups and AI projects at giant companies. The trouble, says Zachary Lipton, is that the opportunity is being overshadowed by opportunists making overblown claims about the technology’s capabilities.
During a talk at MIT Technology Review’s EmTech conference today, Lipton warned that the hype is blinding people to its limitations. ‘It’s getting harder and harder to distinguish what’s a real advance and what is snake oil,’ he said.”

Job Boards, Social Media Sites & Recruitment Advertising
Facebook is in hot water once again — this time, for job ads targeting exclusively men for roles such as police officers, truck drivers and sports store clerks. The ACLU lodged a complaint against the social media giant — as well as 10 employers that used Facebook to post ads — on behalf of three female job hunters and the Communications Workers of America. The complaint was filed with the EEOC and accuses Facebook of enabling discriminatory job postings. Specifically, companies used Facebook’s ad targeting features to exclude female candidates, and young and older men. Source: HRmorning.com

Zinc, a UK based start-up, launched its blockchain based hiring software, which promises to eliminate many of the inefficiencies associated with recruitment within the technology sector. Now available to the public, Zinc has been successfully tested in beta with customers including GoCardless and Booking.com. With a technical role in the UK taking on average 12 weeks to fill, Zinc aims to simplify, accelerate and reduce the cost of hiring by open sourcing the entire interview process. The Zinc ecosystem verifies a candidate’s information on the blockchain and allows workers to securely store it in a distributed network. From there, recruiters can request access to a candidate’s full and verified work history, aptitude and attitude reports on day one of the hiring journey, removing the need for tests and references to be retaken and collected time and time again. eQuest announced that it has added Snapchat to its roster of social media outlets for job posting. This after announcing just two weeks ago it added the much anticipated Facebook for Jobs to its social network. Over half of new Snapchat users are over the age of 25 and the percentage of users over 35 is growing. A millennial hotbed, more and more companies are adding Snapchat to its recruiting strategy given that 63 percent of active US Snapchat users are between 18 and 34 and that its app just recently outranked Twitter in the US Android Store’s list of most-installed apps. eQuest rounds out its social network with Xing (Germany), WeChat (China), LinkedIn (US/Global), Weibo (China), Twitter (Global), Viadeo (France), and Facebook for Jobs (Global). Circa 2118: What Will Humans Do When Machines Take Over – the must-read book of 2018. Evoking the clarion call of the 21st century – if you see something, say something – Peter Weddle has penned a stunningly provocative portrait of the rise of super-C machines in the American workplace. Animated by ultra-intelligent, ultra-intuitive, ultra-empathetic technology, these byte-collar workers will cause near universal unemployment among Americans within the next one hundred years. Weddle, however, doesn’t agree with Hollywood. He acknowledges that the period between now and circa 2118 will test the nation’s character – in fact he calls it a Second Middle Ages – but he believes America will not be dominated by machines, but instead be liberated by them.
