Commentary

“… If HR influencers rely on HR vendors for their livelihood and HR vendors use influencers to make their products and brands more appealing, how much can chief HR officers, HR information systems managers and other HR personnel believe what they hear?

For some industry professionals, it’s a no-brainer. ‘I don’t think HR practitioners should turn to so-called influencers when it comes to making HR operational or tech decisions, at least not solely,’ said Nicole Dessain, a talent management consultant who works with Fortune 100 and smaller companies.

It comes down to who you can trust and for influencers acting in a way that creates trust, according to [William] Tincup, who advises dozens of HR technology startups and is president of the news website RecruitingDaily. ‘You’re getting into the ethics and morality of an individual, so good luck. Some have it and some don’t.’”

Maimai, China’s biggest rival to LinkedIn, announced that the company received a $200 million D Series investment this April in what the company claims to be the largest funding ever in the professional networking market. With a valuation of at least $1 billion, the company has now been raised to unicorn status. Global venture capital DST led the funding with the participation of existing investors of IDG, Morningside Venture Capital, and DCM. In addition, the firm says it plans to invest RMB 1 billion (around $150 million) over the next three years in a career planning program it launched in partnership with over 1000 companies including global top-500 firm Cisco and Chinese renowned firms like Fashion Group and Focus Media. With the new funding, the company is gearing up for a US IPO and overseas expansion in the second half of 2019, according to the company founder and CEO Lin Fan. Source: technode

Merlin, a jobs platform exclusively for hourly workers, is launching in the New York City market. The company, which has been operating in Beta since May 2017, appears to have emanated from Bogota, Columbia with additional offices in NYC and Salt lake City. To date, they have raised $24 million dollars, no small feat for what I would deem an unknown company. Source: Recruiting Headlines

OPENonline, an industry leading provider of background checks and investigative services, announced a partnership with Social Intelligence to add an FCRA-compliant social media background check to their suite of services. According to a recent research report by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), 76% of companies said that they do use or are planning to use social media sites for recruiting. The challenge is knowing what information you can use to make hiring (and firing) decisions without running the risk of discrimination claims. Social Intelligence’s commitment is to deliver unique data, legally and with consumer privacy in mind; they adhere to the guidelines of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and are compliant with Federal and State law. AI & Machine Learning

In a bid to improve connecting employers to qualified candidates, Google has released their artificial intelligence (AI)-powered platform with full availability. Entitled Cloud Talent Solution, the cloud software was formerly known as Cloud Job Discovery. Cloud Talent Solution, which launched as Cloud Jobs API in 2016, is a development platform for job search workloads that factors in desired commute time, mode of transit, and other preferences in matching employers with job seekers. It also powers automated job alerts and saved search alerts. According to Google, CareerBuilder, which uses Cloud Talent Solution, saw a 15 percent lift in users who view jobs sent through alerts and 41 percent increase in “expression of interest” actions from those users. Sneak Preview: Circa 2118: What Will Humans Do When Machines Take Over due out in September 2018. Evoking the clarion call of the 21st century – if you see something, say something – Peter Weddle has penned a stunningly provocative portrait of the rise of super-C machines in the American workplace. Animated by ultra-intelligent, ultra-intuitive, ultra-empathetic technology, these byte-collar workers will cause near universal unemployment among Americans within the next one hundred years. Weddle, however, doesn’t agree with Hollywood. He acknowledges that the period between now and circa 2118 will test the nation’s character – in fact he calls it a Second Middle Ages – but he believes America will not be dominated by machines, but instead be liberated by them.
