AI is here now and you can start using it today. In casual conversation, people tend to conflate narrow focused AI, where a training set is crafted to perform specific tasks, with the inevitable (but not yet created) AGI “artificial general intelligence,” which (in theory) will be able to learn to do anything and possibly be self-aware. It’s an easy mistake to make, but it is a mistake none-the-less.”

IndustryJump is a new career marketplace that brings together filmmaker/video professionals with employers that want to hire them. In addition, the site will also allow for payment transactions by launching a program for “guaranteed payment and also provide its users with services such as automated bookkeeping and 1099 reporting.” Industry Jump showcases portfolios for all film crew positions like producers, directors, makeup artists, grips, production companies and more, all with verified reviews. Industry Jump is the first centralized database created for freelance video production talent that requires verified reviews, making it easy for employers to confidently hire the best talent for each project. The Defense Department’s Spouse Education and Career Opportunities platform is starting up a new association with LinkedIn, the job posting and employee social network site. This new partnership will provide all military spouses with a free membership for LinkedIn Premium. They will be eligible for the membership, valid for one year, every time they have a permanent-change-of-station move, including access to more than 12,000 online professional courses through LinkedIn Learning, as well as access to LinkedIn’s military and veterans resource portal. Melbourne, Australia (ABN Newswire) – To align with previously announced organizational structure changes, SEEK (ASX:SEK) (OTCMKTS:SKLTY) has made a series of changes to its financial reporting structure. The revised segment reporting will now comprise three main segments: SEEK Asia Pacific & Americas (“AP&A”), SEEK ANZ, and SEEK Asia, Brazil Online, OCC and “Other Businesses,” including SEEK Investments: Zhaopin, Online Education Services and Early Stage Ventures. Sourcing, Matching, Assessing, Communicating (SMAC) Technology

Beamery, a London-based startup that offers self-styled “talent CRM”– aka ‘candidate relationship management’ — and recruitment marketing software targeted at fast-growing companies, has closed a $28M Series B funding round, led by EQT Ventures. Also participating in the round are M12, Microsoft’s venture fund, and existing investors Index Ventures, Edenred Capital Partners and Angelpad Fund. Beamery last raised a $5M Series A, in April 2017, led by Index. Its pitch centers on the notion of helping businesses win a ‘talent war’ by taking a more strategic and proactive approach to future hires vs just maintaining a spreadsheet of potential candidates. Its platform aims to help the target enterprises build and manage a talent pool of people they might want to hire in future to get out ahead of the competition in HR terms, including providing tools for customized marketing aimed at nurturing relations with possible future hires. InfoMart, global identity and background screening company, launched today a self-sovereign platform that places ownership of background check data into the hands of the job candidate. InfoMart is the first background check company to allow job seekers to own and control their background check information. Steel Toe Jobs, a Vancouver based Startup specializing in construction careers, released its new website – Steeltoejobs.com. It is powered by CareerLeaf. In November of 2017 Steeltoejobs.com went live with its beta site, a job board and content source for local job seekers. In addition, they met with local employers, employment services groups, trade schools, and training companies to better understand the construction market. Steel Toe Jobs, a privately funded company, has a database of thousands of jobs in BC and Alberta and many original articles that are written with job seekers and employers in mind. TaskRabbit, the on-demand service that conveniently connects people with skilled, vetted Taskers to handle everyday home to-do’s, today announced it cut its service fee in half and lowered prices, making it easier for more people to ‘do away’ with their to-do list. Specifically, TaskRabbit has: Cut its service fee in half, from 30% to 15%, lowering prices at no cost to Taskers; Lowered the price of tasks booked on-demand and allowed clients to hire their preferred Tasker for those tasks; and Launched its ‘Do Away with To-Do‘ brand campaign, highlighting how experienced and vetted Taskers are ready to help people turn ‘to-do’ into done. Talentry, a Munich, Germany-based SaaS social recruiting platform provider, closed its €6M Series A funding round. The round was led by Nauta Capital, with participation from Global Founders Capital and Allgeier SE and a number of business angels including all three founders of Celonis and Carsten Thoma, founder of Hybris (acquired by SAP), who will join Talentry’s advisory board. The company intends to use the funds to accelerate investment in new product capabilities, grow the team, as well as enter into large international markets such as the UK and US. Source: FINSMES

Ghana is now the new headquarters for Google AI. As other people and companies continue to find that Africa is growing and evolving technology and change the world, Google has established themselves for over a decade on the continent and will continue to grow there. As a result, Google estimates that around 10 million Africans will be benefited from the digital skills training modules, with 2 million people having already completed the program. Further, Google is also supporting 60+ tech startups and 100,000 developers, via the company’s Launchpad Accelerator Africa. Google will also adapt its products to ensure people can access high-speed, high-quality internet – working effectively even on low-RAM phones or in weak network connectivity areas. Hired, a recruitment marketplace that connects companies with technology talent, has announced a $30 million series D round of funding from Investment Management Corporation of Ontario to power its recruiting marketplace with data and machine learning. This raise takes Hired’s total funding to more than $130 million, including a $70 million series C round in late 2016. Founded in 2012, the San Francisco-based startup differs from other recruitment platforms insofar as applicants on the Hired platform don’t apply to companies — companies apply to hire them. Users create a profile outlining their skills and experience, and companies make an offer if they like what they see. The candidate can then compare offers side by side and take their pick.
